Owner and managing principal Jimmy Bogroff has held executive positions in publishing, digital sales, operations, and strategy, and has serviced major national advertisers since joining the digital industry in 2007. As a pastor and coach he’s also deeply involved in his community. His major passions are youth, community, and working with organizations that are focused on doing good in the world. Prior to founding Fearless Influence, Jimmy held executive roles with Yahoo!, Channel Intelligence (now a Google Company), and most recently at Advance Local’s, Portland Oregon affiliate the Oregonian Media Group.
The Yahoo! Years
While at Yahoo! he piloted performance-based advertising initiatives for: Content Marketing (later expanded to Native Advertising), Display Advertising, Search Engine Marketing (SEM), and Programmatic. He was part of the transition team from Yahoo! search to Bing search. Jimmy has a deep understanding of search engine marketing and has personally managed dozens of six figure monthly budgets.
In 2009 Jimmy was asked by Yahoo!’s CEO, Carol Bartz to share with his peers, the skills and attributes that helped him to be recognized as an All-Star. In his speech at the Hyatt Regency resort in Laguna Nigel, California he referenced the need to put the client first, to be a great team player and to have a positive mental attitude. These attributes would later be critical in attracting and retaining top talent to build out a successful organization and a core fundamental of his management philosophy of people over profit.
Transforming Oregonlive's Revenue Model to Digital First
In 2013 Jimmy was hired to transform the Oregonian Media Group’s advertising revenue stream from a print-first concentration to a digital-first strategy, focusing on Oregonlive and a suite of managed services. From his arrival in 2013 to his departure in 2019 he more than doubled the digital advertising revenue for the company, focusing on in-house agency services, a client-centric servicing model and a needs-based pre-sales assessment process. Jimmy partnered with industry leaders such as: Matchcraft, Search Influence, Nativo, Lotame, and AppNexus (to name a few).
One of the cornerstones of his success began upon his arrival at the media group, where Jimmy begin to advocate for widespread, Google Ad Words, and Google Analytics adoption. This resulted in over 90% of the media group’s sales and operations staff becoming Google Analytics (GA) certified over the next year, which then resulted in over a dozen individuals becoming proficient in Google Tag Manager (GTM). He was also a major part of the media group’s re-branding effort in the fall of 2013, outlining the digital marketing strategy for The Oregonian and Oregonlive’s new joint venture.
In 2014 Jimmy expanded his role by creating a Digital Strategy organization. He hired Directors of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Audience Targeting and Social Media, as well multiple Senior Digital Consultants to help elevate the company’s digital strategy expertise and expand its stable of consultants. The company experienced explosive growth in these managed services going from just under $500k in revenue in 2014 to over $4M in 2015 and over $6M in 2016.
People First Management, People First In Action
In 2015 Jimmy took on the challenge of the media group’s Advertising Operations (while still retaining the Strategy organization). In this role he focused on creating a customer success organization that put the clients’ needs first, taking a consultative approach to recommendations and focusing on client retention. This group grew to 40+ individuals (account managers, strategy directors, senior digital consultants, customer success associates, and digital product managers) and included several managerial direct reports who have since gone on to run larger organizations themselves. Jimmy’s philosophy has always been to prioritize people over profit and it is his belief that your people ARE your profit. His organization’s focus on retention, coupled with a previous focus on analytics and AdWords certifications, helped the media group to maintain its status as a Google Premier Partner since 2013. Another major focus of the group was to ensure that individuals were cross-trained with exposure to other roles and duties within the organization; a move that would later prove invaluable to career development, and organizational efficiency.
During this time Jimmy’s responsibilities also extended to product development where he was instrumental in the ideation, creation, and implementation of Native Advertising, Content Marketing (sponsor content, branded blogs, whitepapers), Social Media (as a managed service), Branded and Co-Branded Content and the digital replica of the newspaper itself. These new revenue streams helped the company to further diversify its revenue, open up new clients, and created new consumer experiences to service the client’s needs.
In the fall of 2016, Jimmy worked with the parent company, Advance Local, to expand programmatic revenue streams, allowing buyers to gain access to valuable display inventory without the need to facilitate this through a direct salesperson relationship. In this effort, he not only increased the local affiliate’s overall digital revenue (a greater than $1M annual impact) but also its profitability.
During a board presentation to ownership in February of 2017 at the World Trade Center in New York, Jimmy further outlined his vision to create a win-win-win between revenue, profitability, and client needs, by illustrating how a holistic digital strategy (and a holistic campaign optimization strategy) positively impacted the client’s campaign performance and resulted in a more profitable long-term client relationship. Put simply he outlined the value in putting the needs of the client first. This strategy doubled the number of six-figure advertisers and helped the company to restructure and re-align resources to better streamline profitability alongside a declining print circulation.
Jimmy’s time at Yahoo!, Channel Intelligence, and Advance Local have helped him to develop strong omnichannel marketing expertise. He’s worked with thousands of clients to ensure that they have the right strategy to communicate their brand, product, or service. These strategies have been widely adopted across Advance Local’s affiliates and later became training curriculum for the entire
Faith and Community
A vocal Christian in his workplace, Jimmy grew to mentor several individuals in the workplace, and would often pray with his co-workers when they came to him with a need. It was not uncommon that he’d take the time to go have coffee or lunch with a co-worker who was going through a difficult challenge in their life.
In his private life Jimmy has served as a speaking pastor and vocalist on the worship team at the Portland campus of Resound Church in Hillsboro, Oregon.
He maintains an active ministry with his wife, Pearcia, who is also a co-owner and the Chief Servant Officer of Fearless Influence. In August of 2020, Jimmy and Pearcia stepped back from their volunteer pastoral positions and are currently working with multiple church plants in the Portland, Oregon area.
A father of six, he’s also a former high school basketball coach an active youth coach in his local community of “Titletown,” Banks, Oregon, and he was recently named the Varsity Boys Soccer Coach.
Jimmy has coached teams to league and tournament championships, state tournament appearances, and has held several leadership roles in his community – serving on local boards for youth soccer, basketball and school board planning initiatives. While his teams have been successful on the court, he places a higher priority on teaching the fundamentals of the game and actively coaches his athletes that we can only control our attitude, actions and efforts (everything else is out of our control).
Fearless Influence, is a convergence of Jimmy’s corporate experience, ministry, and his desire to build a legacy of giving for God’s Kingdom.
